Scoutbite ("the app", "we") is a food scanner built around a simple idea: you should know what's in your food. We apply the same idea to your data. This policy describes what the app collects, why, and what happens to it. The short version: the app works without an account, we don't run ads, we don't sell data, and we don't use third-party analytics.
What the app collects
Without an account
You can use all core features of Scoutbite without signing in. In that case your scan history and preferences are stored only on your device. We have no copy of them.
- Camera. The camera is used to read barcodes on device. No photos or video ever leave your phone, and nothing is recorded.
- Product lookups. When you scan or search, the app sends the barcode or search text to Open Food Facts to fetch product information. These requests do not include your name, email, or account identity.
If you create an account
Signing in with Apple or Google is optional. If you do, we receive the basic profile your provider shares (an email address and, if provided, a display name) and store it with our authentication and database provider, Supabase. With an active Scoutbite Pro subscription, your scan history and preferences are synced to our servers so they follow you across devices. This synced data consists of barcodes you scanned, when you scanned them, and your scoring preferences and profiles. It is used to provide sync and for no other purpose.
If you subscribe to Scoutbite Pro
Purchases are processed entirely by Apple's App Store or Google Play; we never see your payment details. Subscription status is managed by RevenueCat, which receives a random app-specific identifier and the store's purchase receipt so the app knows your subscription is active.
What we do not do
- No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
- No sale or sharing of personal data with data brokers.
- No third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
- No collection of precise location.
Service providers
The app relies on a small set of processors to function: Supabase (authentication and synced data), RevenueCat (subscription status), Apple and Google (sign-in and payments), and Open Food Facts (product data lookups). Each receives only the data described above.
Data retention and deletion
Local data stays on your device until you delete it (you can clear your scan history in the app at any time). Synced data is retained while your account exists. You can delete your account from inside the app (Settings, account section), which removes your account and synced data from our servers. You can also email us at the address below to request deletion.
Children
Scoutbite is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. The app's baby-food features are built for parents and caregivers.
Security
Synced data is transmitted over TLS and stored with per-user access controls, so one account cannot read another's data.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data. Because we collect so little, most of these are self-serve: your data is visible in the app, and account deletion removes it. For anything else, email us and we'll help.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for material changes, note it in the app. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated policy.
